I have been enjoying the Ian Rutledge series to some extent (Americans writing British mysteries are generally lacking in authenticity with few exceptions). Without repeating what others have commented, my reason for giving this a one star rating is because of the ending - or lack of an ending which has never occurred in this series before. I felt as if some pages were missing. Throughout this book one particular character is missing & thought dead (murdered). Another character is thought to have hid the fact that her husband is dead & buried in the garden. None of these issues were cleared up. Did the authors fail to send the complete manuscript to their publisher? Did one of the editors screw up royally? A huge disappointment.

What can I say, I have not said before. All of Charles Todd's books are GREAT. We have read nearly all of them and we enjoy all of them. The Scotsman in Ian's mind keeps the stories moving along. I think if it were not for that the books would lose some of their glamor. We are now waiting for the next new book about Ian Rutledge. I know Charles Todd writes about more than one character, but so far we have liked the stories about the Inspector and his Scotsman much better, this is only a personal view. I would imagine anyone hooked on These books will be the first ones to say the same. So, I say to those who would like to try these books, go for it. We think these books are super. I don't give away the story in my reviews. Read the synopsis and find out for yourselves.
I had been a fan of Inspector Rutledge -- until this novel. It wanders, it lacks authenticity, it lacks plot and character development; it lacks the voice of earlier works. In brief, it's a bit messy. I don't have a clue why this novel would be so careless,
or as some reviewers have noted, lazy. That seems harsh, but the disappointment of expecting quality and not finding it
leads one to wonder what happened. Publisher deadline? Marketing push? Only one of the two co-authors tackling the
manuscript? I like the characters of Rutledge and Hamish, who seems to have gone a bit silent, and the settings that were
more contained, I hope they return.
This book is written with a different voice. I preferred the earlier voice - it was less clinical and much more human and attractive. the change was quite noticeable almost immediately. I strongly suspect that the mother of the writing team Charles Todd wrote the balance of the other novels. She most definitely should write the rest. I do not like the new voice Some of the richness of this character and his rich emotional and psychological life has been lost.

In addition, I have been waiting with bated breath to see if Ian Rutlege becomes involved with his lady friend. Most annoyingly, as a quick aside, we are told that her husband, who is badly injured, has been discovered, and she is off to see him and that is the end of their relationship. I was not impressed at all with this story line development. The rest of the story is OK. It is certainly not the best in the series, and I was a little disappointed in the story.
Ho-hum. This one was boring. We do not even get a little relief with Bowles' temporary absence. His replacement seems as eager and satisfied to railroad innocent people instead of working to find the real culprit. Why are all of Rutledge's superiors so similar? And how did such lazy and incompetent men rise to a position of power?

I'm happy Frances found someone, but disappointed she'll be even less a part of the series since it sounds like she will no longer reside in London. And no Meredith Channing means we are reverting back to the tired theme of Rutledge falling for a woman who rejects him in the end.

And Rutledge's psychological problems seem to be getting worse, not better. One of my least favorite books in the series.
I love this series, but the ending on this one bothers me quite a bit as we never find out if one of the missing people is alive or dead. Also, the portrayal of the justice system in this series is frightening for the incredible lack of evidence necessary to arrest and try someone for murder. I don't know if this is the flaw of the authors or if this is really the way things were.

That said, I still very much enjoy this series and enjoyed this book.
If you are looking for a fast paced, edge of your seat kind of action, you might want to steer clear of the Inspector Rutledge series. I really enjoy them because I like his character and because I believe that the pace of the mystery reflects a serious desire to solve the mystery and see the problem through. I highly recommend reading them in order because your knowledge of his background is an important element of his approach to a problem. I also like the time period that is reflected in the setting post World War I and this experience plays a major role in his character and I believe in his approach to his position at Scotland Yard. He is frequently at odds with his supervising officer, but he continue to build his cases carefully and completely. If you decide to take the plunge, happy reading!
So what happened to Lewis French? A very prominent character in the book, his whereabouts were not confirmed at the conclusion of the book. Now, I have noticed in previous books in this series a couple of loose ends as well but could live with it. In this book, it seems a glaring error. I really liked the complexity of the book and had been looking forward to a resolution of the mystery but instead only one of the missing main characters was found. I also agree with another reviewer that the arrest of Gooding, the Chief Clerk, and his granddaughter seemed baseless, the only clue being that her handkerchief was found in Lewis French's motor car.
