Well, that was an unexpectedly sexy and adorable read.

The premise of MOUTH TO MOUTH sounds like a run-of-mill romance: Laurel Wolkins shows up at a coffee shop, expecting to meet a man with whom she had been flirting online. Instead, she meets Russ Evans, a cop, who tells her that she's a target for a con artist who bilks women out of their savings, credit cards, and property. Russ is immediately concerned about the beautiful, gentle, and vulnerable blonde with a hearing impariment. To Russ, she looks like she needs protection. But all Laurel wants is some excitement--in the form of hot action between the sheets--in her life. Russ finds himself doing ride-bys by her house, intrigued by Laurel's desire for an affair. Being a man, as well as a cop, Russ eagerly volunteers.

Okay, we've all read this before: cop tries to protect a vulnerable woman by sexing her up. MOUTH TO MOUTH, however, is different. The characters actually seem like real, genuine, and sane people with problems and strengths.

Laurel is a great character. She's beautiful, but doesn't treat sex like a weird twisted game like some romance heroines do. She's a full, complex character who is seeking her own path in life, and she drops in some seriously witty quips in there. It's hard not to love Laurel, and imagine her as a blood and flesh person walking around.

At first glance, Russ seems like the typical alpha hero, but he's not. He's not a douche. The root of his desire to protect and provide for his loved ones is utterly believable and compelling. He's not a perfect man. He tends to say things in overly brutal and blunt ways. He tends to plow through life, trying to brute force things into what he thinks will make everyone around him happy. His heart is good, even if he's rough around the edges. How adorable is that? I loved how Laurel's deafness wasn't a huge deal with him and he learned how to interact with her, but he wasn't overly perfect about it.

The book dealt with Laurel's hearing impairment, really well for the most part. Her lipreading skills are a bit too good to be believable, but there were enough instances where she missed things to make it more believable. The author obviously did her research on Deaf culture, ASL, and oralism and incorporated them in the book in a really natural way. The only bone I have to pick with the book in terms of its portrayal of a hearing impaired woman is the technology. This book was set in 2005, but it seemed straight out of the 90s. In 2005, text messaging was prevalent, and the Internet relay service was freely available. Laurel shouldn't have needed to have other people call for her except when she didn't have access to a computer. (Hello Sidekick, one of the most popular devices for the deaf and hard of hearing at that time.) Of course, this was important to a few plot points, but still... I'm really nitpicking here, but thought I should throw in a FYI* for readers. (I'm hearing impaired myself, so I know about the tech back then.)

There are other problems with the book that prevent me from giving it 5 stars: (1) drawn-out sex scenes. Look, I LOVE sex in my romances--that's why I read them--but it just too too damn long in this book. Also, McCarthy's description left some to be desired and the physical attraction was overplayed, IMO; (2) constantly shifting POVs. It's confusing when, Laurel's POV suddenly shifts to Russ'--I have to read it twice to figure out whose head we're in. Give us a line break AT LEAST (3) secondary romance was meh. It came late in the story and was kind of random. (4) some creepy remarks by Laurel's mom. It's kind of weird when a mother overtly says taht she's checking out the ass of her duather's boyfriend. Eww. (6) too many cliches in the writing. This seems to be a continual problem with McCarthy. I've read one of her books before, and they're replete with cliches like "sweating bullets," etc.

Overall, a really cute romance with REAL people with REAL problems, not some weird trumped up crap that we see in so many romances. Highly recommended.

This was my first read by Erin McCarthy. I was searching for her "Fast Track" book series and this came up at a good price. Even though the reviews were mixed I am glad I bought this book.

I liked the connection between Russ and Laurel. I was unsure how I would feel about the fact that she was being targeted and a person who was deaf. She had the right mixture of strength and vulnerability. They made me laugh as they got to know one another.

The side story with his partner Jerry and her friend Cat were a great addition to the story. If you want a contemporary quick read with steamy scenes give this a try!

This was super! A great story, a really good mystery and superb love story(actually, two) with lots of steamy scenes. Worthy of all five stars and more.
Russ Evans met Laurel Wilkins in a bizarre way - a con artist had used Russ's name to meet Laurel and she'd agreed; now she was here! She was only looking for a sexual time, she told Russ; then later agreed it could be with him! His policeman's lifestyle, the young brother he was bringing up, wasn't ideal for her, and there was still that guy out there trying to rob unsuspecting women, including Laurel, but Russ felt he wanted her for himself, not just sexually. Laurel had been deaf most of her life, treated specially, and wanted to be able to make her own decisions, not be so protected. When things finally came down to a life-threatening situation, they had issues to settle - several of them, if Laurel lived through it.
Only the first Erin McCarthy Book I've read..............(I will confess...the man on the cover did it for me!)
This is a story that will have you at 'Hello'.....From the minute he walks into the coffee shop (wanting only plain black coffee...haha) and Laurel greets him like she knows him..............you will be hooked.
She is a rich girl living with her mother (oh, you'll love her!)Russ is a detective(wow, how sexy is that)and every sensual, explicit loving romance or sex scene was "to die for!" ahhhhhh

The entire experience of reading this book will leave you feeling completely satisfied ***well except I could have read more about these two (at leas 1000 more pages).............Every character is fabulous and utterly jump off the pages to life! I have just gone back to order all (yes all) of her books..............
