Rating: 3.0/5.0

This is the third book in the series if you are going to count the first book (which was a novella). In general, I like this series but I think this book is the weakest among the three. My first gripe is that the atmosphere of the book was not up to to the mark. The first two books were more atmospheric and more frightening than this one. Exodus from the Seven Cities turned more into an action-adventure genre. I have no idea why the author made this change? or was it me who did not feel the atmosphere in par with the first two books? I don't know.

We get to see some characters from the second book Fall of the Seven Cities. I liked that these characters were returning here, but we are introduced to some new ones as well. I feel this can be read as a standalone but I would still say it is better if you read the other books to give you a better understanding about what is going on. Overall, I say the story here was decent and somehow captivating despite the shortcomings.

Exodus from the Seven Cities Seven Cities Saga Book 3 eBook Jay Brenham Reviews

A riveting survival story with credible and realistic themes. Fast paced storytelling in a pandemic world. Clever analogies creating a true to life and realistic depiction of horror!
Good read
It been a really good read. Love and route for the characters I'm going to get the series. Different take on zombie like theme. People still mortal which is actually more scary
Great book. Read the novella as well, also a great read. Lifelike characters, events and descriptions. The author tells the story very well. Will look forward to the next book. Absolutely recommended.
This is the third book in a three book series. It does not have a cliffhanger and can be read as a stand alone. There are no sexual scenes. This is described as a novella, but is actually more the length of a short story. Suggested for older teens and older due to pronounced scenes of torture.

Sam, 24 hours away from being officially discharged from his basic level Navy career, watches the start of the zombie virus in his quiet neighborhood. After rescuing Gloria, a character from the first story, and making sure his elderly neighbor is as protected as possible, he drives to the Naval yard hoping to get onboard a Navy ship. After a protracted car chase, (car versus zombie horde), they discover the big ships are either missing or abandoned. Fortunately, out in the water is a smaller Navy boat, and after yet more chasing the two are rescued. Gloria stays with the Navy boat, and Sam joins a floating collection of private boats. He strikes up a conversation with Matt, a character from the second story. Discovering the zombies may be evolving into something worse, they return from a foraging trip to find the flotilla of private boats burned or missing.

It's interesting how the author is tying together the individual stories by combining characters. Each story starts out with a primary character, which is then added in to another story. It almost gives the same story from different view points. Unfortunately, there is little discussion how each character has found themselves in their present position, so there isn't so much of a feeling of connection between the characters. The author needs to determine the focus of the story--individual people gathering together for survival, or the zombies--and carry it through. To this reader it seems the author is building up to the reveal of apparently evolved zombies, and then conviently gets rid of all the named people in the flotilla.

This story has more plot than the two previous stories. While the primary plot line continues to be escape from the zombies, there are also plot lines involving the different views of people in the flotilla Should they stay or move farther from shore? How should foraged food be divided up? Should they check the nearby houses for food, or stick to tried and true methods? Giving the characters these issues to debate improves our ability to relate to them as people, instead of plot devices.

The car chase, consisting of one car and a lot of zombies, takes up a good portion of the story. Written similar to chase scenes in movies and such, it runs around streets in brilliant turns, switches and back ups. If one was familiar with the landscape, the chase would be suspenseful. Instead, we're led around a convoluted path from nowhere to nowhere.

This reader's biggest complaint is the issue with Matt, his common-law wife, and the newborn child they've raised for almost two years. Told Jenna and the almost 2 year old are missing and possibly with other boats, Matt does the equivalent of waving good bye in the general direction the boats might have gone, shrugs and motors off with Sam. Matt doesn't make any effort to even search straight out from shore, a reasonable direction if the remaining boaters are trying to escape something land based.

Beware. The zombies in this story are "evolving." Some people bitten become the raging, mindless creatures typical for the genre, while others become raging, violent creatures with a huge capacity for cruelty. The description of torture caused by this second type of zombie is graphic.
Another exciting episode in the series. Lots of danger and excitement in this one. Looking forward to more from this author.
Unlike most zombie fiction, where all the heroes are crack shots despite no training and have bunkers full of bullets and food, Sam is a regular guy. When the stuff hits the fan, he isn't prepared, like most of us wouldn't be.

Also enjoyed how the zombies are different than in other books. Can't really say more without spoiling it, but it definitely made things more interesting!
