Children of the Salt Road is an enormously enjoyable read and not at all what I first anticipated. I liked the delicate build-up and pacing that was almost bolero like. There was some slight Stephen King filtered through an Anne Tyler influence floating around the psychological thriller part that you took in a very unique and different direction. My only criticism is I think it needed to be 100 pages or so longer in the build up, fleshing out everyone even more, especially the Nico attraction and fear, and Mark’s descent. The author did an excellent job creating an image of Seth, an off camera sad character, one that had to be tough to write. The only issue is she could have connected him more to the ending beyond the letters Mark didn’t share. Mark was also a much more sympathetic character than I expected and I would have like to have experienced more of his downward journey. But as I said up front, a very enjoyable and well conceived novel, if someone reading this hasn’t gotten a copy yet, go order it now! Bravo!!!

Children of the Salt Road Lydia Fazio Theys 9781503943308 Books Reviews

An absolutely captivating tale that is full of beautiful description and intriguing characters. Children of the Salt Road reveals much about the history of this ancient Sicilian village and its ways and keeps the reader guessing until the very last chapter. Loved it!
This is a good story, taking you to a part of Italy that is rarely written about, and is fascinating. The people here are as different as can be from New York City, where the main characters come from. I found the story interesting and the setting especially so.
A fun read. The author takes you on a whirlwind trip through a beautiful, haunting landscape and the minds of two people affected by it. The story is interesting and the detail is vivid. I enjoyed the descriptions of not only the exterior of the characters' place, but the interior turmoil they endured. A good read, and a good way to visit a part of the world that is rich in culture and history yet not very well-known by most people.
Beautifully descriptive images of Italy...I felt I was there. Haunting. I was drawn back into the book every time I put it down, thinking about what had happened and what would happen next. Lydia skillfully weaves a tale of love, hope and distrust intertwined with rural life and long ago customs in this small rural town in Italy. I am eagerly awaiting her next book!
Catherine and Mark, an artist and an architect from New York, rent a place in Sicily, partly to get away from some unpleasantness at home and partly because it seems like an idyllic place for their work. Nothing is as it seems, however. While I felt somewhat frustrated at times that information about the "unpleasantness" at home was withheld--obviously Catherine and Mark know about it--I was still engrossed in the story of what happens to them in their idyllic village.
I enjoyed reading about the location and places that I too traveled during my times in Sicily. The writing was good and kept the reader engaged. Where it broke down for me was in the gap left between the paranormal and normal with too much left for the reader to try and sew together in a narrative that made sense.
A couple spends time in Sicily primarily to get away from some traumatic happenings back at home in Brooklyn. The upsetting backdrop unfolds creatively and gradually, requiring reader patience. Strange, mysterious events interrupt their visit, causing confusion, conflict and relationship problems. Reality is blurred figuratively and literally. Can we believe what see, feel and hear? Just what is the truth?

A beautifully rendered book that is both a fun read and interesting verbal painting of Sicily, the land, the people, culture and mystery. I recommend it!
